Batterer's Intervention Program

A Batterer’s Intervention Program (BIP) is a structured rehabilitation and education program designed for individuals who have used domestic violence or abusive behavior in their relationships. The goal of a BIP is to help participants:

  • Recognize abusive behaviors

  • Take accountability for their actions

  • Learn nonviolent, respectful ways of relating

  • Change deeply rooted beliefs about power, control, and gender roles

What Happens in a Batterer’s Intervention Program?

1. Duration & Format

  • 52 Week Program, with each group lasting 90 minutes

  • Group-based but led by trained facilitators.

2. Topics Covered

  • Power and control dynamics in relationships

  • Accountability (vs. blaming the victim)

  • Respectful communication

  • Managing anger and jealousy

  • Healthy relationship skills

  • Effects of abuse on children and partners

  • Understanding gender roles, privilege, and entitlement

  • And more
